Page 96Z: My other Iridium Flare Table

"Iridium Flares" are highly-predictable glints of sunlight produced when the geometry between an Iridium communications satellite, the sun, and the earth-bound observer is just right. The predicted magnitude of the "flare" is dependent upon the observers location relative to the path of reflected sunlight reaching the surface of the earth.

I only discovered the "Iridium Flare" phenomenon in July 2010, and I was able to observe my first flare the very morning I first discovered their existence. Since then, I have been actively observing them as well as photographing them when the conditions are right. Indeed, many astrophotographers probably research these predictions and others to avoid having astrophotographs "spoiled" by their potential presence. Modern "stacking" software minimizes the additional workload required to remove a satellite trail or flare from a deep-sky astrophoto, but still...

During my research I have found that much has been written about the Iridium satellites and Iridium Flares since the satellites were first launched in 1997. There are a LOT of photographs of Iridium Flares on the internet. Further down the page I have a table of links to some interesting webpages dedicated to the subject.

My favorite tools for predicting flares are the Heavens Above and Cal Sky websites. I also like to track the satellites using the Real Time Satellite Tracking website.
All are invaluable tools for the satellite observer and I thank the authors of those websites for maintaining them.

In late June 2011, I consolidated all my Iridium sightings on this page. Now that I've seen nearly all of the active satellites that produce Iridium flares, I've started searching out the other Iridium satellites. As most of them are beyond naked-eye visibility, I use binoculars to first spot them then try to acquire them visually. In some cases this is possible; in others it is not - it just depends on their visual magnitude at the time. In the spotting log below, I term the non-flare producing Iridiums as "rogue."

The Iridium Satellite Constellation

Six distinct (count them) orbital "Planes" make up the active Iridium constellation.
Each plane has 11 operational satellites and the entire constellation provides coverage to virtually the entire surface of the globe.
Satellites in the adjacent planes 1 and 6 are travelling in opposite directions.
Like all satellites in a prograde orbit (inclination = >90°) the right ascension of the ascending node precesses to the west with each successive orbit.
Iridium satellites can be observed moving either north or south depending on whether they are in the ascending or descending (relative to the equator) node of their orbit.

The Iridium Satellite Constellation
Six distinct (count them) orbital "Planes" make up the active Iridium constellation. Each plane has 11 operational satellites and the entire constellation provides coverage to virtually the entire surface of the globe.

Below is a tabular log of Iridium Satellites launched with details of when I've viewed them. I'm still researching which satellites are no longer in service.
Like the table above, viewing details are those predicted on the Heavens Above website.

The "Real Time Satellite Tracking" weblink is a very helpful page with a lot of great features. In fact, I used it just tonight (23 Jan 11) to confirm the second Iridium was #51 I saw flare parallel to, and simultaneously with, Iridium 8.

CalSky Cal Sky Calculator

As of 28 July 2011 I've observed all 90 Iridium satellites currently in orbit in one form or another: flares, rogues, and/or just the satellites cruising by.
