After a half day watching planes at JFK it was time to fly to London on Virgin Atlantic. Thankfully my A340-600 G-VFIZ had been sitting at JFK since before I arrived so there was no waiting for an inbound plane to arrive. Scheduled departure time was 630pm so i watched as it was towed into position at the gate and before long we were allowed to board. Virgin Atlantic fly several flights a day connecting JFK and LHR with a mix of A330-300s and the few remaining A340-600s. I chose a flight with the A340-600 because I'd never taken the opportunity to fly one before.

I chose a seat near the very rear of the plane so I could sit on the slightly upsloped floor. In reality the rear portion of the plane is usually level while cruising since the Airbus planes tend to cruise in a slightly pitched-up attitude. As announced by the crew after everyone had boarded, there were 154 passengers along with 14 crew...less than half the seats were occupied on my flight. Thankfully I had an empty seat next to me so the flight was more comfortable than it could have been. When I commented about this to a flight attendant she mentioned the two A330s leaving later for LHR were in fact apparently full.

Below is my photo of G-VFIZ at the JFK gate it arrived at sometime earlier in the day. At this point I didn't know this would be my ride to LHR.

Below is my photo of G-VFIZ being positioned to my departure gate. At 247' 3" (75.36m) the A340-600 is currently the longest Airbus product. It is about 8 1/2 feet longer than the A380.
