It is Saturday April 20, 2013. Near sunset, Amtrak 98, the northbound Silver Meteor, arrives Savannah Georgia just 10 minutes or so tardy.

The majority of the photos on this page taken by Aeromoe during my April 20-21, 2013 trip from Savannah, Georgia to Providence, Rhode Island.

I was in Savannah for a two week work assignment. Following the assignment I rode Amtrak from Savannah to Providence to visit my Dad in Southern Massachussetts.

Savannah is served by several Amtrak trains daily. I chose the evening Northbound departure so I would arrive Providence at a decent hour in the afternoon of the next day. This meant the first half of the trip would be made in darkness but I was OK with that. Based on the timetable, sunrise would occur sometime before arriving Washington D.C. the next morning. There should be plenty of interesting things to see (trains and otherwise) during the daytime portion of the trip.

Prior to departure on April 20th, I had visited the station several times. The first set of photos below is from those visits.

After taking the photos on the 20th, I went back to the hotel and got the rental car and went back to the airport for a little while to watch some more planes. Then one of my co-workers was kind enough to take me back to Amtrak so I could wait for my train. Thanks Lewis!

About two hours after leaving Savannah and just shy of Charleston, North Carolina's Amtrak station, we stopped for some sort of emergency...probably for less than an hour. Those of us on the east side of the train could see alot of emergency vehicles. I witnessed a gaggle of uniformed men walking past our car with flashlights pointed under our car...probably just routine inspection. Amtrak never made any announcement that we heard and my car mates were chatting about various scenarios. In the end we started rolling and soon the Charleston Amtrak station flashed by. Then we stopped after about five minutes. Then we reversed back to the station for the station stop. We never did find out exactly what the emergency was. After our quick Charleston stop the trip was pretty uneventful and we made up most of the lost time enroute to New York.

Sunrise was around 0630am when we were well south of the Washington D.C. area. Ater taking a number of seats "into the sun" I got out of my east side seat and stood in the vestibule on the west side of the train so I could have better lighting for some photos. Before long I snapped a photo of the entrance to the Autotrain facility at Lorton, Virginia and as we passed it I got some photos of the unique autoracks and one Amtrak Dash8. I've never seen this facility or an Autotrain on the rails so it was cool to get a passing glimpse.

In Washington D.C. we stopped for the station stop and the swap of the locomotives from DC traction to overhead catenary. I decided to leave the train for some platform photos and I was just in time to see them backing Amtrak HHP-8 #660 toward our train. Very cool...another HHP-8. I was hoping for a "toaster" AEM-7 but I'm not picky. I managed to get some photos of the HHP-8 as well as some other Amtrak locos around the platform area. Being early Sunday morning, it was pretty quiet.
